Not everyone tends to experience problems with their wisdom teeth, which often erupt during late adolescence or early adulthood. Some will find their wisdom teeth erupt normally with no issues, while others may not have their wisdom teeth come through at all. Problems can arise when there is insufficient space in your mouth to house these additional teeth or if they erupt in a problematic direction. As a result, the tooth will become wedged in or “impacted”. Such wisdom teeth can cause discomfort, jaw cysts and other issues, especially if they come through at an angle and start pushing against an adjacent tooth. It may also make it difficult to clean the wisdom tooth properly, which can lead to decay and gum infection.

Removal of troublesome wisdom teeth should ideally be done as soon as possible before the problems grow worse. Often times we should be able to take care of your wisdom teeth removal at our practice under local anaesthetic, but if x-rays indicate the procedure may be more complicated, we may provide a referral for a specialist oral surgeon.
