Repair and strengthen damaged teeth
A ceramic dental crown protects weak, damaged teeth so they can continue functioning (and shining brightly) for years to come. There are a few situations where our dentists might recommend a dental crown:
Designed to be placed like a cap over decayed, brittle or broken teeth, a porcelain crown is a durable, long-lasting ceramic restoration that can help to strengthen and preserve them. An artificial crown can resolve all the pain and trouble you may experience while chewing and talking, as your tooth is essentially ‘made whole’ again. Crowns are designed to blend in with your natural teeth and smile, while replacing the outward appearance of any unsightly cracks, chips or discolouration from decay originally on your affected tooth.
Often after root canal therapy or other procedures, crowns are recommended to be placed over the treated tooth and are a great option when a filling is not suitable, due to overall weakness of the tooth structure. In doing so, the prognosis of an otherwise undermined tooth is increased by a number of years, and may defer or negate the need for tooth removal in future.
Speaking of missing teeth! Such an issue can affect your speech, bite and increase the risk of tooth decay and gum disease in the future. Moreover, the loss of teeth can alter the shape of your face, where the cheeks often appear sunken in or hollowed. To resolve this issue, a dental bridge is a tooth replacement option that uses neighbouring healthy teeth to support a false tooth and a fixed dental bridge. A dental crown is made and placed onto the teeth on either side of the gap, with a bonded tooth in the middle.
Similar to dental crowns, dental bridges mimic your natural teeth to seamlessly fit into your bite and simultaneously restore your smile. They are the ideal long-term solution for patients who would opt to avoid more invasive tooth replacement procedures or in instances where there is insufficient bone to support an implant.
Studies have shown that on average, crowns and bridges can last for 10 years and more. As with natural teeth, it depends on good oral health, dental hygiene and the forces you apply to your teeth. Dental crowns and bridges still require regular flossing and brushing, and regular check-ups are advisable.
